Zwerm @ concertgebouw (Brugge)

Friday December 23th - 20h00

PREMIÈRE POPCORN

A gathering of Zwerm, Mr. Probe, Mattijs Vanderleen (Tommigun, Sunday Bell Ringers) on drums and singer Gregory Frateur (Dez Mona, Daan) combining the best of a rockband and a contemporary music ensemble.
The concept is clear and easy: the players selected six popsongs that they always wanted to play (but never dared to ask for...). Peter Vermeersch (X-legged Sally, the Flat Earth Society) arranged them for the band and finally six composers were asked to write a new piece inspired by one of the songs.
Popsongs by The Cardiacs, Tom Waits, Bjork, Daan, Jimi Hendrix, Nick Cave and Cindy Lauper.
Compositions by Peter Vermeersch, Serge Verstockt, Luc Houtkamp, Yannis Kyriakides, Bruno Nelissen, Stefan van Eijcken, Daan Janssens and Stefan Prins.

Vrijdag 25 november 2011 - 20h15

Ictus & Masters
Fausto Romitelli: An Index of Metals

Call for Applications: TZLIL MEUDCAN

Tzlil Meudcan
The International Festival & Summer Course for New Music Performance & Composition - ISRAEL 2012

Call for applications.

What is Tzlil Meudcan?

Starting in 2007 with an international chamber festival for contemporary music in Israel, together with an international summer course added two years ago, both hosting world-renowned figures from the fields of music composition and performance, we formed a new hybrid structure that bears the title Tzlil Meudcan, meaning "an updated tone" in Hebrew.

The Tzlil Meudcan Festival and Summer Course aim to host each summer a small select group of young composers and performers working closely and intensely with our guest faculty in the beautiful surroundings of Kibbutz Ein Hashofet and Kibbutz Dalia, located in the north of Israel.

Composers Chaya Czernowin and Steven Takasugi from Harvard University will be the permanent heads of our composition class, while the performance class will have a constantly varying team determined by the festival goals planned for that year. Previous years the line up included soloists from Ensemble Ictus (Belgium), Ensemble musikFabrik (Germany), Ensemble Recherche (Germany) and Ensemble Nikel (Israel) among others.

Each year the festival platform is also including a focus on one internationally acclaimed composer who’s chamber works will be widely presented at the concerts. This year it will be composer Georges Aperghis who will be our guest not only in the festival days but also will join briefly the summer course period.

Participants can expect a joyful summer stay with full accommodations covered, double-room occupancy, three meals per day, and most importantly, close, personal interaction with the faculty. Each performance teacher will be associated with not more then two students in order to give maximum attention to the participants, whose work will focus closely on the acquisition of new technical and interpretative knowledge and skills for the performance of the contemporary repertoire. The composition students will have individual lessons, group meetings, instrumental presentations, as well as one-on-one exchanges with the other participants. Moreover, they will work with the guest ensembles soloists, both pedagogically and practically as they prepare their pieces for performance during the final stage of the festival.

At this conclusion, all participants will head south to the city of Tel Aviv, take in some sun on the beautiful sandy beaches of the Mediterranean sea, and attend three intensive days of concerts, performances, workshops, presentations, and other various activities presenting the fruits of their work prepared at the pedagogical stage of the course along side the general festival program.

Nadar summer academy

For the very first time, Nadar will organize an intensive Summer Academy from 22nd -26th August 2011 in Sint Niklaas (Belgium), in collaboration with the Matrix Centre for New Music. Members of the ensemble will coach performers and composers from 14 to 20 years in playing and creating new music.

Besides being coached when performing contemporary music on their instrument, every participant will get an introductory workshop on electronics and improvised music and will learn how to play other instruments such as balloons, matches, megaphones etc.

Composers will be coached by Nadar’s composers-in-residence Daan Janssens and Stefan Prins. The compositions made by the student composers can be performed by the instrumental students and/or members of the ensemble during the final concert.

Furthermore, the most engaging groups or performers ‘will be offered a concert during the annual “What’s next festival” in Brussels in October.

Nadar at Darmstadt Ferienkurse 2012

After Nadar’s very enthousiastically received concert at the 2010-edition of the Darmstadt Ferienkurse, the ensemble developed a new concert program for the 2012-edition in close collaboration with the Darmstadt Ferienkurse.
This concert-program is based on the concept of the Free samples (click here) – program which is performed in March 2012 at the Handelsbeurs, Ghent. The Darmstadt Ferienkurse commissioned Alexander Schubert, Jorge Sanchez-Chiong and Johannes Kreidler to write new compositions for Nadar within this program and the concept of “sampling”. The video’s Pièce Touchée by Martin Arnold and Long Live the New Flesh by Nicolas Provost will be shown alongside these three new composition.

Press Review: the world's longest melody

Review The Wire (september 2010)

Larry Polansky: The world's longest melody

New World Records / Lavial | Released: 2010 | (80700-2)

ZWERM (ens), [sic] (ens), Toon Callier (gt), Larry Polansky (gt), Jutta Troch (hp), Jeroen Stevens (perc), W. Victor (voc), Stefan Prins (elektr)

The World’s Longest Melody is a collection of experimental music written for the guitar by composer/guitarist Larry Polansky (b. 1954). The guitar has long been an important component in Polansky’s musical explorations, and this CD has grown from the enthusiasm for his work by the musicians of the Belgian electric guitar quartet ZWERM. The acoustic and electric guitar are featured both solo and in small and large combinations; a few pieces not originally conceived for the instrument are also presented here in guitar-oriented guise. These works explore new techniques of experimental intonation, computer composition, and extraordinary and new modes of playing the guitar. It includes the premiere recording of his radically difficult for jim, ben and lou (harp, guitar, and percussion) in which the percussionist retunes the strings to different just intonations as the piece progresses. Given the endlessly fluent and fertile nature of Polansky’s imagination one is somehow reluctant to describe any of his individual compositions as a masterpiece: but certainly this work powerfully encapsulates a wide range of his preoccupations and integrates them into a coherent whole that could not be mistaken for the work of any other composer.
